Videos for Enriching Lessons

Young children learn through activities, movement, play, experimentation, and meaningful experiences. If they can have playful experiences that relate to their lessons, and short bursts of direct instruction, it forms a matrix to build upon. Integrating educational videos that relate to the lessons can be powerful for engagement and spurring growth. Most of the videos feature music and catchy songs, which is an excellent way for children to remember new information. As a teacher, I could just hum the tune to a video we had learned from, and I could see little lightbulbs going on all over the class.

This list is a compilation of popular video productions used in my Pre-K through First Grade classes. They are high quality and engaging. Some are better for younger kids, others work best with older kids, and some are appealing to all ages.

If you can connect a television to a laptop, via HDMI cord, you can click on the links from this website to access the videos. In my planning each day, I selected videos that related to the day’s lessons and put them in a queue by opening a new tab for each video. When I needed to show the videos, they were ready to go. Children will develop favorites and request them, which I sometimes indulged, even if they were not planned. Kids will often give themselves what they need.

The links are for videos posted on YouTube and may begin with ads. Preview each before children see them, skipping the ads, then pause the video at the start of the content, ready to go! You can collect a string of videos as tabs, opening as many as needed. They can be put into the order you like.

These videos are often available to view on YouTube Kids, as well. Enter the name of the video into the search box to bring them up.

In either YouTube or YouTube Kids, you can subscribe and make it easier to locate your favorites later. You can also set up bookmark folders on a laptop, for quick retrieval of favorite videos. This makes it faster when planning lessons.

Nursery rhymes help develop literacy skills; they are important. If a child knows at least eight nursery rhymes, they will more easily learn to read. This is because of the rhyming and rhythms in them. Cocomelon has a good assortment. I found that Pre-K and Kindergarteners enjoyed these.
